Taipei, July 23 (CNA) Four Chinese military aircraft flew into the southwest corner of Taiwan's air defense identification zone (ADIZ) on Saturday, according to the Ministry of National Defense (MND).

The MND revealed that the Chinese planes consisted of two J-16 fighter jets, one Y-8 anti-submarine warfare plane, and a Y-8 tactical reconnaissance plane.

In response, Taiwan scrambled a combat air patrol, sent radio warnings, and deployed air defense missile systems to track the Chinese military planes, the MND said.

Following an increase in the frequency of intrusions by Chinese military aircraft into Taiwan's ADIZ over the past few years, the MND started publishing a tally of such flights on Sept. 17, 2020.

According to MND numbers, the highest daily number of Chinese aircraft recorded entering the ADIZ is 56 recorded on Oct. 4, 2021.

More than 39 aircraft were detected on Jan. 23, 2022, the highest number this year, followed by 30 planes documented in May 30 and 29 aircraft recorded in June 21.

Earlier this month, the MND also said that Chinese warplanes had "intentionally breached" the median line of the Taiwan Strait on July 8, condemning the rarely seen incursion of the median line as "an act of provocation."

An ADIZ is an area declared by a country to allow it to identify, locate, and control approaching foreign aircraft, but it is different from and not part of territorial airspace as defined by international law.
