Taipei, July 10 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense apologized to residents of the county of Taitung Tuesday for inconvenience caused when a target drone crashed into the ground there a day earlier during a live-fire exercise.
The Model CK-3 drone, which was launched to serve as a missile target during the exercise, crashed on a road in the southeastern county due to a failure in its navigation system, according to a preliminary investigation. There were no casualties.
Two other drones -- a Model 1089 and another CK-3 -- fell into the sea that same day due to engine and electronic failures, respectively, the ministry added.
It said it was working with the Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and the Navy to identify any further causes of the incidents and to work on ways to prevent such malfunctions from happening again.
The joint missile test, carried out at Jioupeng military base in neighboring Pingtung County, incorporated personnel from the Air Force, Navy and Army.
