Taipei, July 9 (CNA) A drone that crashed in eastern Taiwan on Monday is believed to have been a target in a major military exercise that took place in Pingtung County earlier in the day, an official said.
The plane crashed to the ground in Taitung County, reportedly causing a large hole. It may have been launched by the Navy as a target for the Standard Missile-1 in the live-fire missile drill, said Liu Ruey-horng, director of the Jioupeng Base of the Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology.
However, he said further information is needed to determine whether it was indeed a Navy aircraft.
Liu's institute was part of the armed forces drill held at the Jioupeng military base in Pingtung.
A Standard missile was launched in the latter part of the 2-hour exercise and successfully hit its target, the defense ministry said.
The Chung-Shan institute is the ministry's main research and development unit.
