Taipei, July 15 (CNA) An air force F-5F twin-seat jet fighter lost contact with militry air controllers Wednesday during a routine training flight off the outlying island of Penghu, military authorities said in a statement.

The plane took off from Chingchuankang air base in central Taiwan at 11: 14 a.m. for an air-to-ground shooting drill on a rock reef in Penghu, but it disappeared from military control center radar at 11: 36 a.m., the Air Force Command Headquarters under the Ministry of National Defense said in the statement.

An air force S-70C rescue plane has flown to Penghu to conduct a search and rescue mission, the statement added.

According to the statement, the plane was operated by pilot Huang Ting-yu, a 26-year-old lieutenant, when contact was broken. Flight instructor Lt. Col. Chang Liang-yuan, 43, was sitting in the back seat during the flight.
