COMPULSORY MILITARY SERVICE TO BE SHORTENED TO 14 MONTHS

Taipei, March 15 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Thursday that compulsory military service will be shortened to 14 months from the present 16 months starting July 1.
President Chen, in his capacity as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, made the remarks while attending a tea party for the nominees for a public service award for youths.
Chen said that he hopes the ratio of volunteer recruits will account for 60 percent of the armed forces by the end of this year and that compulsory military service will be further shortened to 12 months by Jan. 1, 2008.
