U.S. REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO HELP TAIWAN DEFEND ITSELF

Washington, March 2 (CNA) The Department of State reaffirmed Friday U. S. commitment to help Taiwan defend itself.
In a response to China's protest over a U.S. Department of Defense's decision on Wednesday to sell US$421 million-worth missiles to Taiwan, State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack said the sales in question are consistent with the provision of the Taiwan Relations Act which requires the U.S. to make available to Taiwan defense articles necessary for Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability.
McCormack said in a daily press briefing that China expressing concern about arms sales to Taiwan on a regular basis, and when they do so, "we explain that U.S arms sales are consistent with out one-China policy, the three joint communiques, and the Taiwan Relations Act."
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency under the Ministry of Defense said in a press release Wednesday that it will sell 218 Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Misiles (AMRAAMs) and 135 Maverick missiles to Taiwan.
