The United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the violence against members of the Alawite religious community perpetrated by militants affiliated with Syria's ruling Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) regime in Syria's southwestern province of Suweida.
The council, in a presidential statement on Sunday, expressed deep concerns over the recent escalation of violence in Suweida since July 12, including mass killings and the internal displacement of people.
It urged all parties to adhere to the ceasefire arrangement and protect civilians regardless of their ethnicity or religion.
The council also noted that investigations into the recent violence should be credible, swift, transparent, impartial, and comprehensive in line with international standards, and bring all perpetrators of violence to justice.
The so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) has documented multiple cases of violence against Alawites in Suweida that reveal not only physical brutality, but also deliberate humiliation and sectarian abuse.
One of the most alarming incidents took place on July 23 at a checkpoint in the western coastal province of Tartous.
Four young individuals from the Alawite community were taken into custody by the so-called General Security forces.
One individual, Ahmed Khaour, was subjected to insults due to his sectarian identity. Following his refusal to imitate a dog, he was brutally beaten to death.
The other three individuals were held in custody without any charges. The HTS regime sought to secretly bury the deceased beyond the boundaries of their village, which exacerbated tensions within the community.
Violence targeting Syria's Alawite community persists in the aftermath of the brutal campaign executed by HTS forces in March.
According to the SOHR, a minimum of 1,600 Alawite civilians were killed in at least 55 distinct massacres during three days beginning on March 7.
These massacres were also marked by the organized looting and incineration of Alawite residences.
