The establishment of a National Commission on Transitional Justice and a National Commission on Missing Persons in Syria are integral steps towards building a better future for all Syrians.
Transitional justice is vital to achieving long-term peace and reconciliation among all Syrians. Every victim and affected community have the right to truth, justice and reparations, and the assurance that past violations and abuses will not be repeated.
It is imperative that the National Commission on Transitional Justice even-handedly considers violations and abuses carried out by all actors, through a process that is victim-centred and inclusive, with effective and meaningful participation of civil society.
Our Office is ready to provide necessary support to each of these Commissions, and to assist the efforts of all relevant actors, including civil society and victims to this end, as well as to continue to back efforts to fulfill Syria's wider international human rights obligations.
