Statement by UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria, Adam Abdelmoula, on the recent hostilities in Syria

UNOCHA - United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs

Damascus 01 May 2025 — I am deeply alarmed by the recent escalation of hostilities in rural Damascus, which is instilling widespread fear among civilians and putting lives at risk. I am particularly distressed by the reported targeting of a Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) ambulance team member in Ash-Sharfiyet Sahnaya, who sustained serious injuries while carrying out life-saving duties.
Humanitarian personnel and medical workers should never be a target. Attacks against them are unacceptable and constitute a blatant violation of international humanitarian law.
The safety and security of humanitarian workers are essential to ensuring continued access and assistance to communities in need.
Equally concerning is the spread of violence towards As-Sweida Governorate, further threatening the safety of civilians and compounding an already fragile humanitarian situation. This escalation risks undermining hard-won humanitarian gains and deepening civilian suffering.
The United Nations remains committed to delivering principled humanitarian assistance across Syria, guided by the core values of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence.
I strongly condemn all acts of violence that have resulted in civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure. I urge all parties to exercise maximum restraint, uphold their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, and take immediate measures to protect civilians, humanitarian personnel, and civilian infrastructure.
I commend the courage and dedication of all humanitarian partners who continue to operate in increasingly complex and dangerous conditions. Their unwavering commitment remains a lifeline for millions of Syrians who have endured more than a decade of conflict and hardship.
