Tehran (ISNA) – Iran's President described the relations between Iran and Syria as brotherly and strategic and said, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been by the side of the Syrian government and people and will be on this path until the final victory."

Speaking on Tuesday in a meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad, President Hassan Rouhani expressed his condolences on the demise of Mr. Walid Muallem and said, "Tehran-Damascus relations were established after the victory of the Islamic Revolution during the lifetime of the Late Imam [Khomeini], and Mr. Hafez al-Assad, which still continues today through the will and determination of the officials of the two countries".

Emphasizing that the Islamic Republic of Iran will always stand by the Syrian people and government, Dr. Rouhani stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue its determination and will to support the Syrian government and people as a strategic ally, and we will always stand by Syria until the final victory".

The President called confronting the Zionist occupiers and terrorism a common goal of the two nations of Iran and Syria and said, "We have no doubt that we must continue our resistance until the end of the road, which is the elimination of the terrorists".

Referring to Trump's move to annex a part of Syria to the Zionist enemy, Dr. Rouhani stated, "The Zionist occupiers must be confronted until the liberation of the occupied territories, including Golan Heights".

The President stated, "The Islamic Republic of Iran will always be by the side of the Syrian government politically, and in this regard, it considers the Astana Process useful for preserving Syria's interests and territorial integrity, and will follow it seriously".

Dr. Rouhani described the action of the Syrian government in the process of constitutional reform as valuable and said, "We hope that next year general elections will be held in Syria so that the people and all political groups can express their views and opinions".

"The main purpose of terrorism and sanctions is to put pressure on the legitimate and independent nations and governments of the region, so we fully understand the situation of the Syrian people in the face of sanctions because we have experienced the worst sanctions in the last three years," he said.

Emphasizing the resistance of the nations of the region against terrorism and occupation, the President referred to the martyrdom of Martyr Soleimani and Martyr Fakhrizadeh and said, "The reason and perpetrators of the martyrdom of these dear ones are completely clear".

"By assassinating Martyr Soleimani, the enemies wanted to take revenge on the resistance of not only the Iranian nation, but the resistance of the entire nations of the region and with the martyrdom of Martyr Fakhrizadeh, they wanted to take revenge on the progress of science and technology," said Rouhani.

During the meeting, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad described the relations between Tehran and Damascus one of the most valuable and honourable political relations in the world and said, "We believe that other countries should learn how to build a real relationship and friendship and how it can be continued powerfully".

Condemning the martyrdom of Fakhrizadeh and General Soleimani, the Syrian Foreign Minister said, "Those who commit such crimes do not know that the shedding of the blood of these martyrs will make us more determined to achieve victory, and the Syrian people will never forget the sacrifices of Martyr Soleimani".

Foreign Minister Mekdad described the US government's action in violating international commitments and agreements as irrational and said, "Syria believes that the Iranian government's action in concluding a nuclear agreement with the P5+1 has been very constructive and useful, and that Iran has fulfilled its obligations very well".

"Next year, we will hold presidential elections in Syria, and we hope that the friends of Syria will continue to stand by us with strength so that we can become victorious," he said.
