According to the information received by Sputnik from sources in the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), the United States as part of preparation for the operation to free Raqqa from Daesh militants has set up a coordination center in the Syrian town of Tell Abyad, which is controlled by the Kurdish forces.

As was reported a few days ago in Tell Abyad of al-Hasakah province about 50 US soldiers have arrived in 15 armored cars. They set up a coordination center near the village of Mınbeteh, 2 kilometers from the city center. They put up a US flag marking their center.

The area around the center, which is located near the Turkish border, is guarded by soldiers of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The representative of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party, in Tell Abyad, Cudiya Kurdo spoke with Sputnik and confirmed the information about the US center in the city.

"A few days ago in Tell Abyad the US military arrived and set up a coordination center, they hung their flags. As part of the center's task, the US forces will assist the Syrian fighters of the Democratic Forces, by providing them with consulting services in the field of military tactics and strategy," Kurdo said.

Tell Abyad, which is located 90 km from Raqqa, has a strategic importance for the Syrian Kurds since its location joins two Kurdish cantonments of Kobani and Jazira.

Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
