Asaad Zoubi, the head of the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee's delegation to the Geneva peace talks said that there are more than 25 areas under siege.
GENEVA (Sputnik) – New besieged areas continue to appear in Syria, and they now number some 25, the head of the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee's delegation to the Geneva peace talks said Tuesday.
"There are new sieges in Northern rural Homs, Aleppo and Latakia…There are more than 25 areas under siege," Asaad Zoubi told reporters after a meeting with UN Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura.
Last month, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on a ceasefire in war-torn Syria, which took effect on February 27.
The ceasefire is aimed at enabling international humanitarian assistance to reach besieged parts of Syria and ending the violent clashes between government and opposition groups.
Since the start of 2016, UN humanitarian convoys have been able to reach around 260,000 people in hard-to-reach and besieged areas in Syria.
Earlier in March, the Russian reconciliation center in Syria said it had received 144 metric tons of food, drinking water and other essentials to provide aid to besieged areas.
