Armed Syrian rebels on Wednesday started to leave the strategic city of Homs under an agreement reached between the government in Damascus and the opposition, Homs Governor Talal Barazi said.

CAIRO (Sputnik) – The governor told SANA news agency that the first group of fighters had already left al-Waer district of the city.

A source in Homs told Sputnik that the first bus carrying fighters and their families had already left the district, adding that it was decided that a total of 14 buses would be used in this operation.

At the beginning of December, Syrian rebels and President Bashar Assad's government reached a ceasefire agreement under the aegis of the UN, according to which opposition fighters will completely withdraw from the city of Homs that has being controlled by Syrian insurgents for four years.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the country's government fighting a number of opposition factions as well as radical Islamist groups, including Daesh, also known as ISIL/The Islamic State and the Nusra Front.

Russia, which has outlawed Daesh, designating it a terrorist organization, has been conducting airstrikes against the group's positions in Syria since September 30, following a request from President Bashar Assad.
