The Syrian Army and pro-government forces have secured the area surrounding an oil field near the ancient city of Palmyra in the central Syria Homs Province, reports say.

Sky News Arabia said on Wednesday that the Army retook the Jazal oil field's surroundings.

The channel also announced that a number Takfiri militants were also killed in the operation.

The area includes key oil producing centers. Jazal would, under normal circumstances, produce thousands of barrels of oil per day.

The liberation of the region comes as part of the recent advance of the Army forces toward Palmyra.

The channel cited a security source as saying that the Army was currently reinforcing its military presence around Palmyra. The operation to liberate the city, however, has not begun yet.

Syria's Al Watan daily reported on Monday that Syrian government forces had made further military progress in a bid to recapture the ancient city, reopening a major route for oil and gas supply to the capital Damascus.

The daily said the army had intensified its operations against the Takfiri ISIL group in Palmyra and its vicinity, making 'tangible progress' in the area of west Biyarat.

ISIL forces occupied Palmyra on May 21, promptly raising fears that the terrorists would once more destroy historic world heritage sites and artifacts there, like what they did months ago in the city of Mosul, Iraq.

Syria's antiquates director, Maamoun Abdulkarim, said on Tuesday that Takfiri ISIL militants had destroyed two ancient Muslim mausoleums in Palmyra.
