Foreign-backed militants have launched deadly rocket attacks across various parts of Syria as the country continues to wrestle with violence sourced from abroad.
The fatalities, according to officials, included at least six children and a woman, who lost their lives in attacks in the provinces of Dara'a and Damascus in the country's south as well as the Latakia and Aleppo provinces in its north.
The worst attack, which took place in Dara'a, saw rockets crashing into a school in the city of Bursa al-Shams, killing five children and injuring over a dozen others.
A woman and her little girl were killed during rocket attacks on several neighborhoods in the capital, Damascus.
Militants also shot dead a villager at his farm in the Sweida Province, also in the country's south.
Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 200,000 people, according to reports. New figures show that over 76,000 people, including thousands of children, lost their lives in Syria last year.
The Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating in Syria.
Attempts at crisis resolution
Syrian government representatives and opposition parties have, meanwhile, begun negotiations in the Russian capital, Moscow, in a bid to resume long-stalled peace talks.
Six members of the Syrian government have met with 32 members of various opposition groups in an attempt to defuse the nearly four years of conflict in the country.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned on Wednesday, "I think there is a risk of external solutions justifying foreign geopolitical ambitions being forced on the people of Syria."
The Russian top diplomat said he believes that the participants in the Moscow consultations "agree that the goal (the settlement of the situation in Syria) can only be achieved through political dialogue."
