Militants in Syria have killed 311 civilians over the past six months using improvised mortar shells made of cooking gas canisters, a report says.

The Britain-based so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday that two-thirds of the deaths, or 203 people, happened in the northwestern city of Aleppo.

According to the report, the so-called "hell cannons" have been fired on government-held districts of Syria's largest city.

It condemned the use of the wildly inaccurate weapons and noted that 42 children and 25 women were among the dead in Aleppo. It said over 700 civilians have been also wounded during that time.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The violence fueled by Takfiri groups has so far claimed the lives of over 200,000 people, according to reports.

The ISIL militants have seized swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, terrorizing and killing people of all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians, in the areas they are controlling.

The Western powers and some of their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are reportedly supporting the militants.
