Saudi Arabia has been the largest purchaser of arms from Canada, a report says.
A recent report published by Ottawa Citizen showed that Saudi Arabia has received USD 422.3 million and USD 152.8 million worth of arms and military goods from Canadian companies in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
This makes Saudi Arabia the largest reported purchaser of Canadian military goods in 2012 and 2013, according to the report, which is originally compiled by the Ontario-based Project Ploughshares, a non-government organization that works to advocate peace and prevent war.
In fact sales to Saudi Arabia reached a combined total of nearly USD 529 million for the two years or about 92 percent of all exports from Canadian companies.
The report, titled the Export of Military Goods from Canada, 2012-2013, further elaborated that "ground vehicles and components" have dominated the shipments to Saudi Arabia, most of them armored vehicles built by General Dynamics Land Systems Canada (GDLS Canada) in London, Ontario.
The study also shows that the countries in the Middle East have received the largest portion by value of Canada's military exports in 2012.
The total value of the exports to these countries by Canadian companies exceeded USD 704 million, more than three times the value of military exports to NATO countries for that year.
