Eastern MD troops arrive in Mongolia to participate in Selenga 2024 international exercise

Military trains of the Eastern MD arrived in Mongolia to participate in the joint Selenga 2024 Russian-Mongol exercise. A solemn welcoming ceremony of Russian troops was held at the Bayantumen railway station near Choibalsan. According to the ancient tradition, Russian guests were met with national cuisine.

Russian troops removed materiel from the trains when the ceremony was over and marched 30km to the Choibalsan training ground. The preparing phase and the exercises themselves will take place there.

An official opening of the Selenga 2024 Russian-Mongol drills will be held at the training ground in Mongolia.

Russian and Mongolian servicemen will march on the parade ground in a single formation. There will be trainings to hone skills in tactical operations; days of Russian and Mongolian cultures will be organised during the exercises.

A tactical-level operation on searching, blocking and destroying a mock illegal armed formation will be held during the active phase of the exercises.

On the 85th anniversary of the Soviet-Mongol victory in the Battles of Khalkhin Gol, it is planned to hold a number of official events such as wreath-laying ceremony to the memorial in Choibalsan.

The Selenga Russian-Mongol exercises are annually held since 2008. It was tactical exercises with combat shooting till 2011 and was called Darkhan (translation from Mongolian is builder.) In 2011, the exercises were named after the river which starts in Mongolia flowing through the Republic of Buryatia and empties into the Baikal Lake. Since that time, the exercises are focused on counter terrorism.
