On May 2, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on Cyprus Maria Angela Holguin in Moscow.

Mr Lavrov expressed his desire to promote Ms Holguin's efforts to create conditions for the resumption of talks between the two communities of the island. He reaffirmed Russia's consistent position on this issue, according to which a settlement pattern should be fair and sustainable, rest on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and be determined by the Cypriot parties themselves with due account of their fair interests.

Mr Lavrov positively assessed the activities of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and the UN Secretary-General's goodwill mission on maintaining stability on the island, which is indispensable for a dialogue between the communities. Mr Lavrov said Russia is ready to continue working to enhance the efficiency of the UN in this area, in particular, by taking part in the UNFICYP.
