On September 24, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The parties conducted a thorough exchange of views on a wide range of topical international matters, including the UN system response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the preparations for the 26th session of the Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The parties touched upon a number of regional subjects, including the developments taking place in Afghanistan, in eastern Ukraine, in Syria and Libya. They had a separate discussion concerning appointments to senior UN positions.

Both sides underscored the importance of further strengthening the UN's central role on the international arena and reaffirmed their commitment to expanding mutually beneficial cooperation between Russia and the UN.
