Russian marines hold tactical exercises in Russia's southern republic of Dagestan.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Approximately 600 Russian marines from the Caspian Sea Fleet with 100 pieces of military hardware and equipment are holding tactical exercises in Dagestan's Adanak Range, the Russian Defense Ministry's Southern Military District's press center announced Monday.

"The goal of the exercises is the coordination of actions of marine troop units both in offensive and defensive positions, as well as marching as a unit with their equipment to an unfamiliar training range in the Southern Military District. According to the scenario of the training, one of the marine units deployed from the Astrakhan Region is to complete a 700-kilometer (435-mile) march and take positions in an unfamiliar area," the press service said.

Following the march, the marines are set to practice anti-landing defense of the area as well as countering illegal armed groups, according to the press service.

The drills will continue through the end of the month.

Dagestan is a hotbed of Islamist insurgency in the North Caucasus. Multiple violent attacks have plagued the region over the past decade.
