Russian Ruling Party Wins Regional Vote

VOA News March 14, 2011

Early results from Russia's regional elections show that the ruling party has won the vote, widely seen as a test for the upcoming parliamentary and presidential polls.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party beat out its rivals in all 12 local legislative elections.

Putin described the results as "more than satisfactory," adding that the results demonstrated Russians' confidence in their government.

The opposition says the vote was marred by irregularities and has accused United Russia of pressuring voters to cast ballots in its favor. The party denies the charges.

Sunday's elections were the last before Russia's national parliamentary elections, set for December 4.

Russia's next presidential election is scheduled for March 2012.
