General safety requirements needed for UAVs - Russian ministry

RIA Novosti

17:32 01/03/2011 MOSCOW, March 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russia should work out safety requirements for unmanned air vehicles, Transport Ministry civil aviation department deputy director Andrei Shnyryov said on Tuesday.

"The state should regulate this activity to minimize risks," Shnyryov said. "If we do not set the right framework, we will not allow the area to develop," he added.

Shnyryov said the risks could be divided in two groups: collisions with other aircraft and damage to people and property on the ground.

The easiest way to avoid collisions is delineation of airspace, and also use of special equipment, he added.
