South Korea Holds Live Fire Drill Despite North's Threats

February 20, 2012

South Korea has conducted live fire military exercises on five islands located close to the disputed border between South and North Korea despite warnings of retaliation from Pyongyang.

South Korea said there was no reaction from the North during two hours of drills in an area of the Yellow Sea where four South Koreans were killed in a North Korean artillery attack on Yeonpyeong Island in 2010.

South Korea's military said the exercises were held on all five islands but mentioned its forces fired to the south, away from North Korea.

North Korea threatened to launch an attack that would be a "thousand times more severe" than the 2010 incident if the South went ahead with the exercise.

South Korea and the U.S. plan submarine exercises in the Yellow Sea this week.
