Seoul to propose date for talks with N.Korea next week - Yonhap

RIA Novosti

07:33 21/01/2011 MOSCOW, January 21 (RIA Novosti) - Seoul will next week propose a date for working-level talks with North Korea to prepare a high-level defense meeting, Yonhap said on Friday citing South Korea's defense ministry.

"We will propose the date to North Korea for working-level defense talks next week," the South Korean agency quoted defense ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok as saying. "The talks are likely to be held in February if the two sides agree on the agenda and other issues."

North Korea has repeatedly suggested holding negotiations with South Korea over the past several weeks in an effort to promote economic cooperation between the two countries, but Seoul had until now rejected the proposals.

On Thursday, Pyongyang sent a telegram signed by North Korean Defense Minister Kim Young-chun to his Southern colleague, Kim Kwan-jin, calling for the high-level officials from the two Koreas to hold a meeting to resolve pending bilateral military issues. South Korea has accepted the proposal.

Pyongyang said it was ready to discuss any issue, including the North's alleged sinking of a South Korean warship in March and the artillery strike on the South's Yeonpyeong Island in November.
