South Korea accepts North's proposal on top military talks

RIA Novosti

15:30 20/01/2011 MOSCOW, January 20 (RIA Novosti) - South Korea has accepted the North's proposal to hold high-level military talks, Yonhap news agency said on Thursday.

Earlier on Thursday, Pyongyang sent a telegram signed by North Korean Defense Minister Kim Young-chun to his Southern colleague, Kim Kwan-jin, calling for the high-level officials from the two Koreas to hold a meeting to resolve pending bilateral military issues.

The North's message said that "the time and the place of the talks could be chosen by the Southern side."

Pyongyang also offered Seoul to discuss any issue, including the North's alleged sinking of a South Korean warship in March and the artillery strike on the South's Yeonpyeong Island in November last year.

Last week, Pyongyang requested to hold a working-level dialogue on January 27 in North Korea's border city of Kaesong, to the north of the demilitarized zone that divides the two Koreas. The meeting is expected to focus on the level of participants and date of inter-Korean talks.

North Korea has repeatedly suggested holding negotiations with South Korea over the past several weeks in an effort to promote economic cooperation between the countries, but Seoul had thus rejected the proposals.
