INTRO: Pentagon officials have asked a group of
distinguished Americans to advise the military on its
investigation of the deaths of civilians during the
Korean War. Survivors of a massacre near the village
of No Gun Ri accuse U-S forces of killing hundreds of
non-combatants in fighting five decades ago. V-O-A's
Jim Randle reports.
TEXT: The outside experts include a former Marine
General who fought in Korea and now teaches at
Harvard; a former Washington Post reporter who wrote a
highly regarded book on Korea; a former U-S Ambassador
to Korea; a Harvard history professor; and a former
Member of Congress who is a decorated Korean war
veteran.
Army Secretary Louis Caldera has recently launched an
investigation by the U-S Army's Inspector General,
historians, and others.
Pentagon Spokesman Ken Bacon says this new group of
experts is intended to give Secretary Caldera some
perspective from outside the Army.
/// BACON ACT ///
He will get advice from the experts. He can
rely on them for information, to make
recommendations. I assume the experts will be
going to Korea.
/// END ACT ///
U-S Army officials are already collecting information
on the alleged killings and recently visited Korea to
exchange information with Korean officials looking
into the same allegations.
Mr. Bacon says Defense Secretary William Cohen wants
the investigation to be rapid, but through. (Signed)
