INTRO: A team of U-S Army investigators has begun
a probe into an alleged massacre committed by
American troops during the Korean war. Hyun-Sung
Khang reports from the South Korean capital,
Seoul, the team interviewed residents of the
village where the incident was said to have
occurred and met with South Korean investigators,
as well.
TEXT: The 12-man U-S team tape-recorded
testimony from people who say they are survivors
of the massacre. They allege that American troops
opened fire on them while they were fleeing
advancing North Korean soldiers in the early days
of the Korean War in 1950. The investigators also
visited the railway bridge at No Gun Ri, just
over two hundred kilometers from the capital
Seoul, where the killings are said to have taken
place.
American troops are accused of opening fire on
civilians taking refuge under the bridge,
believing that North Korean agents were among the
group.
A spokesman for the U-S team - which is being led
by Lieutenant General Michael Ackerman -- pledged
that the investigation would be probing, accurate
and complete. He added the United States is
committed to finding the truth about what
happened at No Gun Ri, no matter where it leads.
The U-S team also met with members of a separate
South Korean team that is investigating the
allegations. The Seoul government had pressed
for a joint probe into the incident, but while
agreeing to cooperate closely, Washington,
resisted the idea.
The Army investigators will meet with a (U-S)
Defense Department group next week to review the
