Pakistan Tests Ballistic Missile With Nuclear Capability

December 11, 2015

Pakistan has test-fired a surface-to-surface ballistic missile that can carry a nuclear warhead and has a range of some 2,750 kilometers.

Pakistan officials say the December 11 launch was meant to 'validate various design and technical parameters' of the Shaheen-III, which was first test-fired in March.

Officials said in a statement that the missile landed in the Arabian Sea.

The testing comes just two days after Islamabad hosted a regional peace conference that called for the resumption of negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Pakistan became a declared nuclear power in 1998.

Its old regional nemesis, India, has been a nuclear power since 1974.

The two countries have missile systems that can strike deep inside the other's territory.
