At least five militants have been killed during a fierce fighting with soldiers in Pakistan's troubled northwestern tribal areas near the Afghan border, security sources say.

Pakistani security officials said on Monday that the clashes took place in the militant-infested Shawal district of the North Waziristan tribal region, English language newspaper Dawn reported.

The sources added that at least three troops also sustained injuries during the fierce clashes. The wounded soldiers were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

This comes a day after a senior al-Qaeda commander was killed during a raid by Pakistani security forces on his hideout in the country's volatile southwest.

Also on July 29, the notorious leader of Pakistan's outlawed terrorist group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi was killed in a shootout with police while trying to escape in the eastern province of Punjab.

The terror group is responsible for killing hundreds of Shia Muslims in Pakistan, who say the Pakistani government must take decisive actions against the forces involved in the targeted killings.

The Pakistani army launched a massive operation against militant hideouts in North Waziristan in June 2014, after a deadly raid on the Karachi International Airport ended the government's faltering peace talks with pro-Taliban militants.

Pakistan stepped up its anti-terror campaign following a late 2014 attack on an military-run school in the northwestern city of Peshawar, which claimed the lives of about 150 people, mostly children.

The army says it has managed to kill nearly 3,000 militants over the past months.

Violence and insecurity have been increasing across the region following the US-led 2001 invasion of neighboring Afghanistan.

Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
