Pakistan's Balochistan opposition leader arrested

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Nov 1, IRNA -- Opposition Leader in Balochistan Assembly Yar Muhammad Rind has been arrested from courtroom on the orders of the Supreme Court on Thursday, local media reported.

The Quetta Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) had awarded life-imprisonment to Balochistan Assembly MPA and former federal minister Rind, his son Sardar Khan Rind and four other people for allegedly kidnapping a man and failing to appear before the court, on June 28, 2011.

Rind had earlier tried challenging the case in the Balochistan High Court (BHC), however, when he came to the Supreme Court today to file a plea against the ATC’s verdict, he was arrested. His plea was also rejected.

The former minister’s counsel Akram Shaikh maintained that the case against his client was wrong.

Counsel of Rind pleaded the court to take his client to Sindh House. The Chief Justice ordered to put him in Secretariat police station as law is equal for everyone.

Meanwhile, Pakistan People’s Party’s Kalat division has suspended the party membership of Balochistan Chief Minister Aslam Raisani over continually violating party policies.

President of the PPP’s Kalat division, Rafeeq Sajjad, said that Raisani had been violating the party’s policies for the past four years which was why his membership had been suspended.

Sajjad said that neither the issues of the PPP workers were being addressed, nor was Raisani spending sufficient time in Quetta.

He said that Raisani had been voted into power by PPP workers but the chief minister was not taking steps to solve their problems.

Sajjad added that the PPP was weakened in Balochistan due to the actions and policies of Chief Minister Raisani.
