5 die in US drone strike in NW Pakistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Feb 16, IRNA -- An American spy aircraft fired missiles into a house in Pakistan’s North Waziristan tribal region early Thursday and killed 5 people, local media reported.

The attack occurred in Spalgai area some 12km from Miranshah, main town in the region, Express TV reported. Two other people were injured.

The pilotless aircraft fired two missiles into the compound, residents were quoted as saying. The house was destroyed in the pre-dawn strike, locals said.

Locals said that members of the local Taliban groups came under the pre-dawn attack.

It is the second US drone strike in North Waziristan in a week and 7th this year.

At least 10 suspected militants were killed in a strike on February 9 when American drone struck a house.

The US resumed drone strike in Waziristan tribal region in January after a two-month lull.

A recent investigative report said this week that the CIA-run pilotless aircraft are targeting innocent people.

The London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism said the drone campaign in Pakistan has killed dozens of civilians who had gone to help rescue victims or were attending funerals.

The investigation was published just days after President Obama claimed that the drone campaign in Pakistan was a ‘targeted, focused effort’ that ‘has not caused a huge number of civilian casualties.’
