IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Feb 1, IRNA -- An American spy aircraft fired missiles into a Pakistani tribal region killing 12 people, local media reported on Wednesday.
Dawn TV reported that the US drone fired three missiles in Orakxzai tribal region, a stronghold of Pakistani Taliban.
There was no report about the identity of those killed in the strike.
The attack carried out late Tuesday night in a remote region was the first after President Barack Obama confirmed for the first time that the US is conducting drone strikes in the Pakistani tribal region.
Geo TV meanwhile reported that Pakistani fighter aircraft struck hideouts of the Taliban militants in Orakzai and killed 13 of them.
Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman in reaction to President Obama’s statement on Tuesday said that the US unmanned drone strikes inside its territory are illegal and counterproductive.
President Barack Obama had claimed that the US drone aircraft have struck Taliban and al-Qaeda targets within Pakistan.
Since 2004, US drones have carried out more than 300 attacks inside Pakistan. Majority in Pakistan describes these drone strikes as a sheer violation of country’s sovereignty.
