Pakistani forces kill 10 militants, arrest commander
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, June 26, IRNA -- Pakistani security forces have killed at least 10 militants in Lower Orakzai tribal region in clashes erupted after attack on a check post, officials said Friday.
Militants launched early morning attack on a checkpoint with rockets and automatic guns injuring two soldiers, they said.
Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani had declared victory over militants in Orakzai agency earlier this month when he traveled and met elders there. But attacks and counter attacks are still continuing in Orakzai, the stronghold of Taliban militants.
Officials believe that Taliban militants, fled from South Waziristan region after operation in October, have taken shelter in Orakzai agency.
Clashes started in March in Orakzai have displaced about 200,000 people, who have shifted to other cities.
Orakzai is the only one of the seven agencies that does not border Afghanistan in the rugged tribal region of Pakistan. Hundreds of militants have been killed in clashes with Pakistani troops in Orakzai over the past few months, according to the army.
Taliban commander: Police in the Pakistani port city of Karachi have arrested a Taliban commander, officials said.
On a tip, the police raided Baldia Town Thursday night and arrested "Zafar Hussain" of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), police said.
A pistol was also seized from his possession, police sources said, adding the arrested commander had carried out various terrorist attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and was wanted by police for many years.
