The United Nations relief agencies said on Friday that 90 per cent tents supplied to survivors in Pakistan earthquake-hit areas are not winterized.
Four hundred and twenty-five thousand tents have been provided to the quake affectees but unfortunately ninety percent of these are not winterized, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations for Humanitarian Assistance, Jan Vandemoortele told a news conference in Islamabad.
He said there are three top priorities of the UN to save the people from cold weather that is providing heated environment, iron and CGI sheets and winterized tents and kits.
He said ten thousand winterized tents and ten thousand winterized shelter kits are being provided to the affected people living at the altitude of five thousand and above and so far five thousand tents have been provided while remaining would be provided by the twelfth of this month.
Mr. Vandemoortele said efforts are underway to winterize these tents to save the people from hard weather and avoid the spread of pneumonia diarrhea, missals or other diseases.
Although situation has been improved in the affected areas in health education and food supplies but there is dire need of accelerating the supply of winterized tents and shelter material particularly CGI and Iron sheets to save the affected people on the high altitude.
He appealed to the International Community to speed up provision of shelter material to save the people from severe weather in earthquake hit areas.
