Yesterday, on April 16th, Jonatan Vseviov, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, took part in an informal videoconference of EU foreign ministers focussing on Iran's drone and missile attack on Israel over the weekend and the security situation in the Middle East.
"I call on all those involved to avoid escalating the situation and to make every effort to alleviate tension in the region," he said, adding that the EU's credibility depends on how it responds to global challenges and on whether it can act as a substantial power in resolving them.
Vseviov added that we are facing several crises that will determine our future. "The decisions we make now will indicate whether we are brave enough to defend and maintain a rules-based world order," he remarked. "Events over the weekend clearly show that drone and missile attacks can be fended off with international cooperation. I call on all Member States to give Ukraine what they urgently need."
Other issues raised during the videoconference were the imposing additional sanctions on Iran, which is both jeopardising the security situation in the Middle East and supporting Russia's aggression in Ukraine.
Vseviov also provided an overview of ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure the prompt release of the crew members of the Aries - the vessel recently seized by Iran's Revolutionary Guard - among whose number is an Estonian resident.
