Federal Chancellor condemns attack on Israel - "Iran must put a stop to this aggression"
Germany - Federal Government
Speaking in Shanghai on Monday during a trip to China, the Federal Chancellor once again condemned the attack by Iran on Israel, saying it had been a serious escalation. It was now crucial for everything to be done to de-escalate the situation on the ground, Scholz said.

"Our appeal is very clear: Iran must put a stop to this aggression," said Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz, reporting from his meeting with the heads of state and government of the G7, of which Germany is a member. According to a joint statement by the G7, Iran's actions had been a further step towards destabilising the region, thereby risking an uncontrollable regional escalation. The G7 condemned the Iranian attack in the strongest possible terms, at the same time assuring Israel of their full support.
Contribution to de-escalation
"Everyone agrees that the way in which Israel managed to repel this attack with local and international partners was truly impressive," said Scholz on Monday in Shanghai during his trip to China, at the same time appealing to Israel to contribute to de-escalation itself.
On Saturday night, Iran fired cruise missiles directly at Israel from its national territory for the first time. According to Israeli reports, almost all of the more than 300 drones and missiles fired by Iran were repelled. Among those countries supporting Israel in its defence were the USA, the UK and Jordan.
"Extend sanctions against Iran"
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock spoke out strongly in favour of extending the sanctions against Iran. "We can see how dangerous Iran's actions are," said Baerbock, adding that Iran had led the Near and Middle East to the brink of disaster with its attacks.
At the beginning of the week, the Federal Government summoned the Iranian ambassador in Berlin in response to the attacks on Israel. The foreign ministers of the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) are due to assemble for a special meeting on Tuesday.
Protection of Jewish facilities has top priority
Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser said: "The protection of Israeli and Jewish facilities in Germany has top priority." Since the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israel on 7 October 2023, the threat to Israel and to Jews had become even clearer than before, said Faeser, which is why protective measures had been stepped up even further.
