At least 20 ISIL Takfiri terrorists have been killed and dozens injured when Iraqi border guards thwarted an attempt by the militants to infiltrate into the western province of Anbar.
The Takfiris were trying to enter the town of al-Waleed, situated on the Syrian border and located approximately 550 kilometers (341 miles) west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Monday.
The Iraqi guards confronted and killed twenty of the infiltrators, while scores of others sustained injuries. Sixteen Iraqi border guards were also killed during the incident.
Separately, Iraqi security forces killed four terrorists, among them a sniper, during an operation in the Sijariya neighborhood in eastern Ramadi, located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of Baghdad.
The ISIL launched an offensive in June and took control of Iraq's second largest city, Mosul, before sweeping through parts of the country's Sunni Arab heartland.
The extremist group has threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians during its advances in Iraq.
New figures released by the United Nations show that violence in Iraq claimed at least 1,232 lives in November alone.
The UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said on Monday that nearly 940 civilians and over 290 security forces lost their lives in November, while more than 2,430 others sustained injuries.
