Iraq's top court has declared Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's State of Law coalition as the largest in parliament.
The Federal Court announced the ruling on Monday, in a move which is regarded as another boost to Maliki's efforts to remain in office for another term.
Under Iraq's constitution, the country's new President Fouad Masoum must ask Maliki to form a new government.
Maliki's State of Law Coalition won the majority of seats in April's parliamentary elections. However, the coalition is under pressure to withdraw its support for Maliki and pick another candidate.
On Sunday, Maliki threatened legal action against Masoum for his failure to name a premier from the State of Law coalition by August 10 deadline.
"I will submit today an official complaint to the federal court against the president of the Republic for committing a clear constitutional violation for the sake of political calculations,' Maliki added.
He noted that he would not give in to pressure to drop his bid for a third term in office.
The development comes as the Iraqi army is engaged in fierce fighting with ISIL Takfiri terrorists who have taken several towns since they intensified their attacks in Iraq in mid-June.
Tens of thousands of people have been displaced after their cities were captured by ISIL militants. Among the displaced are the residents of the Christian town of Qaraqosh and the Izadi Kurdish community of the Sinjar town in Iraq's north. ISIL militants have also executed thousands of Iraqis in the areas they have seized.
