More Than 20 Dead In Iraq Attacks

July 11, 2013

Separate attacks on security personnel guarding an oil pipeline and on Shi'ite mourners have killed more than 20 people in Iraq.

On July 11, gunmen attacked an army checkpoint near the town of Barwana, some 220 kilometers northwest of Baghdad, killing three soldiers and wounding four others.

The gunmen then went to an area where guards for an oil pipeline were housed and killed 11 of them.

Later on the same day, a car bomb targeted a group of Shi'ite mourners at a funeral tent in Muqdadiyah, northeast of Baghdad.

A suicide bomber then attacked the same site when emergency vehicles arrived.

At least 10 people were killed and 22 wounded in that attack.

Sectarian violence has risen dramatically in Iraq in recent weeks, killing hundreds of people.
