  • Russia Touts Return Of Iraq Arms Inspectors RFE/RL 27 Oct 2004 -- Russia has called for the United Nations Security Council to discuss the return of UN weapons inspectors to Iraq following the disappearance of 342 metric tons of high explosives in the country.
  • JAPAN/IRAQ HOSTAGE VOA 27 Oct 2004 -- A group in Iraq believed led by Islamic militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi has taken a Japanese man hostage, and is threatening to behead him if Tokyo does not remove its troops from Iraq within 48 hours. A video of the hostage was posted on the Internet and aired on an Arabic satellite television network.

  • Iraq: Amnesty Report Cites Concern Over U.S. Commitment To Stop Torture RFE/RL 27 Oct 2004 -- The human rights group Amnesty International has issued a new report blaming the U.S. administration for fostering what the group calls a "war mentality" that led to the torture of prisoners as well as other violations of the Geneva Conventions. Coming just a week before the U.S. presidential election, the report harshly criticizes the administration of George W. Bush for allegedly being more interested in finding ways to skirt laws that are meant to protect human rights rather than complying with them.
