- IRAQ WRAP VOA 10 Aug 2004 -- For a sixth day, U.S. forces, backed by U.S. warplanes, are battling militia loyal to the radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. The fighters refuse to leave the holy city of Najaf despite warnings they will be killed. The U.N. investigation into allegations of corruption in the oil-for-food program is seeking access to Iraqi records to check on possible illegal actions by U.N. staff.

Shaw, Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for International Technology Security, were under investigation by the Inspector General of the Department of Defense (DoD IG). The allegations were examined by DoD IG criminal investigators in Baghdad and a criminal investigation was never opened.
- Iraqi Elections, Forces Will Determine Coalition Size AFPS 10 Aug 2004 -- Elections and the status of the Iraqi security forces will determine the number of coalition forces in the country, said the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during interviews here today.
- ABU GHRAIB PRE-TRIAL HEARINGS SCHEDULED IN MANNHEIM CENTCOM 10 Aug 2004 -- The Abu Ghraib Prison courts-martial will hold pre-trial hearings for four of the cases (Corporal Charles Grainer, Specialist Megan Ambuhl, Staff Sgt. Ivan Frederick, and Specialist Javal Davis) in Mannheim, Germany, Aug. 23-24.

- UN/KURDS VOA 10 Aug 2004 -- U.N. officials say Kurdish authorities in the northern Iraqi city of Irbil are seizing millions of dollars worth of U.N. assets, including automobiles and computer equipment. Kurdish leaders say the equipment was purchased with Iraqi oil revenue under the Saddam Hussein regime, and is part of an authorized transfer of assets from the United Nations to local authorities.
- Iraq: UN Panel Says Oil-For-Food Probe To Take Much Longer Than Expected RFE/RL 10 Aug 2004 -- The head of an independent panel investigating corruption in the United Nations' "oil-for-food" program for Iraq says it may take another year to produce its main findings. Paul Volcker, former chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve, told reporters it is too early to make any conclusions about abuses of the program because of the vast amount of data his team must sort through. Volcker also rejected charges that UN officials were trying to block the investigation and said he has received full cooperation from Iraqi officials.

- Two Foreign Hostages Released In Iraq RFE/RL 10 Aug 2004 -- A Jordanian official says two Jordanian truck drivers kidnapped by Iraqi militant groups were released.
- IRAQ/SADR VOA 10 Aug 2004 -- In Iraq, radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has vowed to keep fighting against U.S. forces, scuttling hopes for a quick end to the uprising by his supporters that began anew last week. The battles have been especially fierce in the holy city of Najaf, but an impoverished neighborhood in Baghdad has also been taken over by Mr. al-Sadr's militia. Part of the cleric's appeal comes from his unwavering anti-American stance.
