  • Negroponte Calls U.N. Resolution a "Milestone" for Iraq Washington File 08 May 2004 -- Calling the new U.N. Security Council resolution on Iraq "an important milestone," U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Negroponte said June 8 that the resolution "makes clear that Iraq's sovereignty will be undiluted and that the government of Iraq will have the sovereign authority to request and to decline assistance, including in the security sector."

  • U-N / IRAQ RESOLUTION ADOPTED VOA 08 Jun 2004 -- The U-N Security Council has unanimously adopted a resolution restoring Iraq's sovereignty on June 30th. The measure gives U-S led military forces a mandate to provide security in Iraq through the end of next year.

Council members say the latest draft includes enough assurances from Washington that Iraqi authorities will maintain a high level of control over security matters after the transfer of power. Chief UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi told the council that the incoming government's top challenge will be to resolve the country's security issues.
