NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Sailors and Marines embarked in USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) departed June 7 on an eight-week deployment to the Central Command area of responsibility in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and the global war on terrorism.
The amphibious assault ship left Norfolk to transport assets of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit Air Combat Element. Upon mission completion, the ship is scheduled to return to Norfolk.
The deployment is not unlike the recent deployment made by the Norfolk-based USS Bataan (LHD 5), which also deployed for about eight weeks in support of OIF.
The ship is surging under the Navy's new operational construct, the Fleet Response Plan; however, this surge is not expected to increase operational tempo over the ship's work up and deployment cycle.
