  • EDITORIAL: OPERATIONS IN IRAQ VOA 03 Jul 2003 -- The U.S.-led coalition continues to maintain security in Iraq, even as preparations proceed for the first steps toward Iraqi self- government. Coalition forces completed Operation Desert Scorpion which resulted in the detention of more than one-thousand-three-hundred individuals suspected of being connected to the former regime of Saddam Hussein. In addition, the coalition found five-hundred rifles, one-hundred rocket-propelled grenades, nine-million U.S. dollars, and one-and-a-half billion Iraqi dinars.

  • Iraq: Pentagon Reassessing Violence As Shi'a Leaders, Iran Deny Roles RFE/L 02 Jul 2003 -- Recent comments by U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld indicate the factors contributing to violence in Iraq may be more complicated than the U.S. previously thought. Rumsfeld told journalists this week that the proliferation of violence is not caused exclusively by loyalists of Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party. He suggested some attacks may be the work of Iranian-backed Iraqi Shi'a who had opposed Hussein, as well as what he called "criminals" and "foreign terrorists."

  • Security Council to vote tomorrow to phase out Iraq-Kuwait border mission UN News Centre 02 Jul 2003 -- The United Nations Security Council today discussed Secretary-General Kofi Annan's recommendation to phase out by 6 October the UN peacekeeping operation that for nearly 12 years monitored the demilitarized zone between Iraq and Kuwait, and is set to vote tomorrow on a draft resolution approving the measure.
  • Developments in Africa, post-war Iraq, key issues for Security Council in July - President UN News Centre 02 Jul 2003 -- The President of the United Nations Security Council for July said today that while tackling volatile developments in Africa would be a major focus throughout the month, the 15-nation body was also set to hold the first review of the implementation of its resolution on arrangements for post-war Iraq.

Foreign Reactions

  • IRAQ / NEIGHBORS VOA 02 Jul 2003 -- Saddam Hussein's policies isolated Iraq from many of its neighbors. He invaded two of his neighbors, Iran and Kuwait, and had relatively hostile relations with the rest. Saddam's policies are still affecting the way Iraqis feel about their neighbors.
