The U.S. military says an American soldier wounded in an attack on a military convoy in Baghdad Tuesday has died. The death of the soldier, who was a member of a non-combat Civil Affairs Command unit, raises to at least 22 the number of American military personnel killed in attacks in Iraq since May 1. Six British soldiers were killed in southern Iraq last month.
Despite the deaths and the almost daily attacks, President Bush says coalition forces will remain in Iraq until freedom is firmly established there. Mr. Bush vowed Tuesday not to allow Iraq to return to tyranny. British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, who visited southern Iraqi city of Basra Wednesday, echoed Mr. Bush's resolve to root out remnants of the ousted Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein.
The U.S. administrator for Iraq Paul Bremer has called the attacks on U.S. troops worrisome, but said they will not stop the coalition from establishing freedom and democracy in Iraq.
