  • Iraq fires AAA at ONW aircraft 22 Oct 2002-- Coalition aircraft responded in self-defense to the Iraqi attacks by dropping precision guided munitions on elements of the Iraqi integrated air defense system.
  • IRAQ ELECTIONS/AMNESTY VOA 22 Oct 2002-- The U-S press is pondering the latest domestic moves in Saddam Hussein's Iraq, trying to determine their true meaning. Last week, the president was unanimously reelected to a new seven year term. Shortly thereafter, presumably in celebration, he declared a general amnesty and ordered most of the nation's prisoners released from several jails.
  • U-S-Iraq-U-N VOA 22 Oct 2002-- The United States is urging other members of the U-N Security Council to act quickly on its revised draft resolution on disarming Iraq. Secretary of State Colin Powell is leading the administration's diplomatic drive with phone calls Tuesday to key foreign ministers
  • U-S-Bosnia-Iraq VOA 22 Oct 2002-- The United States is calling on authorities in Yugoslavia and Bosnia-Herzegovina to take action against firms it says have been providing military assistance to Iraq in violation of U-N sanctions. The companies are said to have been helping Iraq refurbish its aging fleet of military aircraft.

  • COALITION FORCES STRIKE A COMMAND AND CONTROL COMMUNICATIONS FACILITY 22 Oct 2002-- In response to recent Iraqi hostile threats against Coalition aircraft monitoring the Southern No-Fly Zone, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH Coalition aircraft used precision-guided weapons today to target an air defense communications facility near Al Jarrah, 90 miles southeast of Baghdad, and an air defense operations center near Tallil, 160 miles southeast of Baghdad. The strikes occurred at approximately 5:10 p.m. EDT.

Steps to Disarm Iraq Washington File 22 Oct 2002-- President Bush has again urged the United Nations -- for the sake of the world body itself and for peace in the world -- to approve a strongly worded resolution on Iraq that makes clear to the Saddam Hussein regime that it must disarm.

Security Council on the text of a resolution concerning Iraq as "messy" and "complicated," but moving forward.
