A terrorist attack on two police patrol units in southeastern Iran has claimed the lives of five law enforcement officers.

The attack occurred Friday along the Khash-Iranshahr road in Sistan and Baluchestan province, a region long plagued by cross-border militancy. According to a police statement, armed assailants opened fire on the patrols, killing five officers before fleeing the scene.

The so-called Jaish al-Adl terrorist group later claimed responsibility for the attack.

Security forces have launched a manhunt to track down the perpetrators.

The victims were identified as Captain Gholamreza Vahdani, along with three other police personnel, Mohammadreza Rahimi, Mohammad Noruzi, Hassan Tavala, and Hadi Royaie, a soldier.

The terrorist group has carried out numerous terrorist attacks in Iran, primarily in Sistan and Baluchestan province.

Last week, the group claimed responsibility for a shooting incident in Iranshahr County that left one police officer dead.

Sistan and Baluchestan province, which borders Pakistan, has witnessed several terror attacks targeting both civilians and security forces over the past years.

Jaish al-Adl has repeatedly targeted civilians, border guards, and police forces in an attempt to destabilize the region.

In one of the deadliest attacks in recent years, ten police officers were killed in Taftan County, last October.
