Tehran (ISNA) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani announced that a delegation from Iran will depart for Saudi Arabia in the next few days to lay the ground for reopening the Iranian embassy in Riyadh and the consulate in Jeddah.
Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Kanaani pointed to the recent agreements reached between Iran and Saudi Arabia to resume relations and reopen embassies of the two countries in Tehran and Riyadh and said, "Based on the agreements, a technical delegation from Saudi Arabia arrived in Tehran on Saturday. This delegation is currently reviewing the conditions and laying the ground for the reopening the kingdom's embassy in Tehran and the consulate of this country in Mashhad".
"The recent agreements between Iran and Saudi Arabia would have positive effect on boosting cooperation in order to improve peace and stability and on strengthening economic and trade relations between the two countries and in the region," he added.
"The initial steps between Iran and Saudi Arabia to appoint ambassadors have been completed," he also noted.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the spokesman said, "Due to the new conditions in the region, we hope to witness the formation of a sustainable ceasefire process in Yemen and the formation of a sustainable peace process in accordance with the interests of the Yemeni nation with the participation of all Yemeni parties in this country."
Regarding Iran-Iraq relations, Kanaani said, "The relations between the two countries are currently on the right track and we witness constructive cooperation between the two countries in various fields".
On diplomatic ties with Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, Kanaani said that an Iranian delegation was dispatched to Manama and that the UAE-Iran ties are moving forward particularly following the return of Abu Dhabi's ambassador to Tehran.
Regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the spokesman said, "Iran is ready to return to its commitments under the nuclear deal if all signatories to the agreement and the US abide by their commitments and observe the Iranian national interests and red lines".
Elsewhere in his remarks, Kanaani pointed to Tehran-Baku relations, saying, "Iran attaches importance to its ties with Azerbaijan as a neighboring country in the region. We call on Azeri side to focus on common interests and not to allow any misuse to be committed by the parties who wish to realize their illegitimate interests by creating differences and tensions between regional and neighboring countries".
"Iran always emphasized the necessity of resorting to political frameworks and dialogue and avoiding controversial issues behind the podiums. Despite the tensions that arose, Tehran tried to resolve misunderstandings in the form of bilateral dialogues," he added.
Labeling the recent events from the Azeri side as rushed and unproductive, the spokesman stated that Iran assesses the recent phone call between the Iranian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers as positive.
