Iran sent on Thursday two warships to the waters of Yemen to ensure safety of merchant ships' navigation from pirate attacks, media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The decision comes after on Wednesday, Pentagon confirmed that US naval forces were subjected on Monday and Tuesday to cruise missile strikes from the territory controlled by Houthi forces. The Houthi rebels denied their involvement in the attack on the US vessel.

According to the Tasnim news agency, Iranian Alvand and Bushehr warships were dispatched to the Gulf of Aden and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait to protect trade vessels and oil tankers from pirates.

The plans to dispatch Iran's 43rd flotilla to Africa and the Atlantic Ocean were announced by Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari.

Sayyari also said that based on international laws, Iran's Navy had the right to be present in all international waters, Tasnim reported.
